Divisibility Rule of 471

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

The divisibility rule is a way to find out whether a number is divisible by another number without using the division method. In real life, we can use the divisibility rule for quick math, dividing things evenly, and sorting things. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 471.

What is the Divisibility Rule of 471?

The divisibility rule for 471 is a method by which we can determine if a number is divisible by 471 or not without using the division method. Check whether 1413 is divisible by 471 with the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Multiply the last digit of the number by 2, here in 1413, 3 is the last digit, so multiply it by 2. 3 × 2 = 6.

Step 2: Subtract the result from Step 1 from the remaining values but do not include the last digit. i.e., 141–6 = 135.

Step 3: As it is shown that 135 is not a multiple of 471, therefore, the number is not divisible by 471. If the result from step 2 were a multiple of 471, then the number would be divisible by 471.

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 471

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids to master division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 471.

  • Know the multiples of 471: Memorize the multiples of 471 (471, 942, 1413…etc.) to quickly check the divisibility. If the result from the subtraction is a multiple of 471, then the number is divisible by 471.

  • Use the negative numbers: If the result we get after the subtraction is negative, we will avoid the symbol and consider it as positive for checking the divisibility of a number.

  • Repeat the process for large numbers: Students should keep repeating the divisibility process until they reach a small number that is divisible by 471.

For example, check if 2826 is divisible by 471 using the divisibility test. Multiply the last digit by 2, i.e., 6 × 2 = 12. Subtract the remaining digits excluding the last digit by 12, 282–12 = 270. Since 270 is not a multiple of 471, 2826 is not divisible by 471.

  • Use the division method to verify: Students can use the division method as a way to verify and crosscheck their results. This will help them to verify and also learn.

Problem 1

Is 4710 divisible by 471?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 4710 is divisible by 471.

Explanation

To check the divisibility of 4710 by 471, we will use a hypothetical divisibility rule:

1) Divide the last part of the number, 710, by 471.

2) If the result is a whole number, then the entire number is divisible by 471. In this case, 710 ÷ 471 = 1.5, which is not a whole number.

3) However, if we consider the entire number 4710, it is divisible by 471 exactly, as 4710 ÷ 471 = 10.

Problem 2

Check if 1884 is divisible by 471.

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 1884 is divisible by 471.

Explanation

To check the divisibility of 1884 by 471:

1) Consider the hypothetical rule where we divide the last section, 884, by 471.

2) 884 ÷ 471 = 1.877, not a whole number.

3) However, upon checking the entire number, 1884 ÷ 471 = 4, which confirms divisibility.

Problem 3

Is 942 divisible by 471?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 942 is divisible by 471.

Explanation

To verify this:

1) Assume a divisibility check for the last digits, 42, by 471.

2) This does not directly provide a result since 42 is smaller than 471.

3) However, examining the whole number, 942 ÷ 471 = 2, confirms it is divisible.

Problem 4

Can 1500 be divisible by 471 following the divisibility rule?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

No, 1500 isn't divisible by 471.

Explanation

To determine if 1500 is divisible by 471:

1) Hypothetically, attempt to divide a section like 500 by 471.

2) 500 ÷ 471 = 1.061, not a whole number.

3) Checking the full number, 1500 ÷ 471 ≈ 3.184, confirms it is not divisible.

Problem 5

Check the divisibility rule of 471 for 2826.

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 2826 is divisible by 471.

Explanation

To confirm:

1) Use a rule to divide a segment, say 826, by 471.

2) 826 ÷ 471 = 1.754, not a whole number.

3) However, by examining 2826 entirely, 2826 ÷ 471 = 6, which confirms divisibility.
