In mathematics, addition is one of the four basic mathematical operations. The sum is the result of adding two or more numbers. In this article, we will discuss what a sum is, how to find it, and some examples. Adding small numbers: 2 + 3 = 5 (If you have 2 apples and someone gives you 3 more, now you have 5 apples.) Adding larger numbers: 12 + 8 = 20 (If you have 12 candies and add 8 more, the total is 20.)

The sum of two or more numbers is the result you get when you add them. A sum represents the total when items or values are combined.
To find the sum of two numbers:
For example, \(2 + 2 = 4 \), where 4 is the sum and "+" is the symbol for addition. The alternative words for sum are all together, put together, how many in all, and total.
The sum of two numbers is the result of putting them together. Adding small numbers is easy, and you can even use your fingers to help.
Example:
There are three candies in a jar. You can count them by holding up three fingers.
\(3 + 3 = 6\) now there are six candies.
What if we add three more candies to the jar? Now you can count all of them again by holding up three more fingers.
\(6 + 3 = 9\) so there are nine candies in the jar.
Adding numbers is just about putting groups together and counting them all.
The number line is the visual representation of the numbers in a straight line. To find the sum on the number line:
Step 1: Draw a number line and mark numbers on it. Make sure to cover all the numbers that you want to add.
Step 2: Start at zero(0). Place a point at 0, which is the starting point.
Step 3: Move forward along the number line by the value of the first number. And place a point where you land.
Step 4: From the landing point, move forward by the value of the next number. Repeat this for all remaining numbers.
Step 5: The position of the last point on the number line is the sum of all the numbers.
For example, find the sum of 2 and 5
First, we mark the number 2 on the number line.
Then move 5 steps to the right.
We land at 7, so \(2 + 5 = 7\).

To find the sum of two numbers, add them together. Children can count on their fingers to add two numbers. For example, to add \(2 + 5\), first open 2 fingers on one hand and open 5 more fingers. There are 7 open fingers, so \(2 + 5 = 7 \).
Place value method: This method organizes numbers by ones, tens, hundreds, and son, and adds each column from right to left while carrying extra tens to the next column. Let us see the process of adding numbers using place value method.
Step 1: In a column, align the digits by place value. If any number has fewer digits, pad the left with zeros or leave blank.
Step 2: Start from the right most (ones column). Add all the digits in that column. Write the ones digit of the result below the line, and carry the tens if there are any to the next column.
Step 3: Now, move to the tens column, where you have to add all the tens digits and any carry from the ones column. Write the ones digit of that sum and carry the rest.
Step 4: Continue the same process leftward, through each place value, always adding the carry from the previous column.
Step 5: Finally, when you reach the endmost column, and if you carry a value from the left most column, write it to the left of your last written digit. And it will complete the sum.
To master the concept of the sum easily, students can follow a few simple and effective techniques. Here are some tips and tricks that you can follow:
Use things like candies, toys, or buttons to show addition. Let kids combine them and count.
Example: “You have three apples. I give you two more. How many now?”
Fingers help with small numbers. Hold up fingers for each number and count them all.
Example: 4 + 3 → hold up four fingers, then three more, and count.
Students usually make errors when finding the sum, and mostly they tend to repeat it. In this section, we will be discussing some of the common mistakes and the ways to avoid them.
The sum is the result of adding two or more numbers, and addition is one of the basic mathematical operations that we use in different fields. In this section, let’s see how we use it in our daily lives.
There are 4 red balloons and 6 blue balloons at the party. How many balloons are there altogether?
The total number of balloons is 10
To find the number of balloons altogether, we add the number of red balloons and blue balloons.
So, the total number of balloons \(= 4 + 6 = 10 \)
A bus stopped and picked up 4 people. At the next stop, 6 more people boarded. What is the total number of people who got on?
The total number of people = 10
The number of people who got on the bus \(= 4 + 6 = 10\)
Use a number line to find the sum of two and six.
The sum of 2 and 6 is 8
To add 2 and 6 using a number line, we first mark 2 and then move 6 steps to the right. It lands at 8.
So, \(2 + 6 = 8\)
Find the sum when six is added to five.
\(6 + 5 = 11\)
To find the sum, we add the numbers together.
So, \(6 + 5 = 11 \)
Liam has 9 pencils in his pencil box. He finds 2 more under his desk. How many pencils does he have now?
The number of pencils Liam has is 11
Liam had 9 pencils, and he found 2 more.
So the total number of pencils is \(9 + 2 = 11\)
