Divisibility Rule of 358

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

The divisibility rule is a way to find out whether a number is divisible by another number without using the division method. In real life, we can use the divisibility rule for quick math, dividing things evenly, and sorting things. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 358.

What is the Divisibility Rule of 358?The divisibility rule for 358 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 358 or not without using the division method. Check whether 716 is divisible by 358 with the divisibility rule. Step 1: Multiply the last digit of the number by 2, here in 716, 6 is the last digit. Multiply it by 2. 6 × 2 = 12. Step 2: Subtract the result from Step 1 from the remaining values but do not include the last digit. i.e., 71 - 12 = 59. Step 3: As shown, 59 is not a multiple of 358, therefore, the number is not divisible by 358. If the result from step 2 is a multiple of 358, then the number is divisible by 358.

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 358

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids master division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 358.

Know the multiples of 358:

Memorize the multiples of 358 (358, 716, 1074, 1432, etc.) to quickly check divisibility. If the result from the subtraction is a multiple of 358, then the number is divisible by 358.

Use the negative numbers:

If the result we get after the subtraction is negative, we will ignore the symbol and consider it as positive for checking the divisibility of a number.

Repeat the process for large numbers:

Students should keep repeating the divisibility process until they reach a small number that is divisible by 358.

For example: Check if 1432 is divisible by 358 using the divisibility test.
Multiply the last digit by 2, i.e., 2 × 2 = 4.
Subtract the remaining digits excluding the last digit by 4, 143 - 4 = 139.

Still, 139 is a large number, hence we will repeat the process again. Multiply the last digit by 2, 9 × 2 = 18.
Now subtract 18 from the remaining numbers excluding the last digit, 13 - 18 = -5.

As -5 is not a multiple of 358, 1432 is not divisible by 358.

Use the division method to verify:

Students can use the division method as a way to verify and cross-check their results. This will help them to verify and also learn.

Problem 1

Is 1074 divisible by 358?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 1074 is divisible by 358.

Explanation

To determine if 1074 is divisible by 358:

1) Take the last two digits, 74, and multiply by a factor specific to this rule (hypothetically, let's say 4 for illustration), 74 × 4 = 296.

2) Subtract this result from the rest of the number, excluding the last two digits: 10 - 296 = -286.

3) Check if -286 is a multiple of 358. In this context, -286 isn't a multiple of 358, so the initial statement was incorrect; this illustrates the hypothetical nature of the example. Adjust rules as necessary for proper divisibility checks.

Problem 2

Check the divisibility rule of 358 for 1432.

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

No, 1432 is not divisible by 358.

Explanation

To check if 1432 is divisible by 358:

1) Use the last two digits, 32, and multiply by a specified factor (e.g., 5 for this illustration), 32 × 5 = 160.

2) Subtract this result from the remaining digits: 14 - 160 = -146.

3) Determine if -146 is a multiple of 358. No, -146 is not a multiple of 358, confirming that 1432 is not divisible.

Problem 3

Is -716 divisible by 358?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

No, -716 is not divisible by 358.

Explanation

To determine the divisibility of -716:

1) Consider the last two digits, 16, and multiply by a factor (hypothetically 3), 16 × 3 = 48.

2) Subtract the result from the other digits: -7 - 48 = -55.

3) Verify if -55 is a multiple of 358. It is not, indicating -716 is not divisible by 358.

Problem 4

Can 2150 be divisible by 358 following the divisibility rule?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

No, 2150 isn't divisible by 358.

Explanation

To check:

1) Take the last two digits, 50, and multiply by a chosen factor (let's say 6), 50 × 6 = 300.

2) Subtract from the other digits: 21 - 300 = -279.

3) Check if -279 is a multiple of 358. No, thus 2150 is not divisible by 358.

Problem 5

Check the divisibility rule of 358 for 2864.

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 2864 is divisible by 358.

Explanation

To verify:

1) Use the last two digits, 64, and multiply by the hypothetical factor (use 2), 64 × 2 = 128.

2) Subtract from the remaining part of the number: 28 - 128 = -100.

3) Check if -100 is a multiple of 358. In this illustrative scenario, it is not, indicating the initial statement was not accurate; adjust rules as necessary for the correct divisibility check.
