Sum

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

In mathematics, addition is one of the four basic mathematical operations. When two or more numbers are added, the result is called the sum. In this article, we will discuss what a sum is, how to find it, and some examples.

What is Sum?

The sum is the result of adding two or more numbers. A sum represents the total when items or values are combined. For example, 2 + 2 = 4, where 4 is the sum and ‘+' is the symbol for addition. The alternative words for sum are all together, put together, how many in all, and total.

How to Find Sum on Number Line

The number line is the visual representation of the numbers in a straight line. To find the sum on the number line, we first identify the number and move the number of steps equal to the second number towards the right. The point where we end up is the sum.

For example, find the sum of 2 and 5
First, we mark the number 2 on the number line.
Then move 5 steps to the right.
We land at 7, so 2 + 5 = 7.

How to Find Sum of Two or More Numbers

To find the sum of two numbers, add them together. Children can use their fingers to add two numbers. For example, to add 2 + 5, first open 2 fingers on one hand and open 5 more fingers. There are 7 open fingers, so 2 + 5 = 7.

Real-World Applications of Sum

The sum is the result of adding two or more numbers, and addition is one of the basic mathematical operations that we use in different fields. In this section, let’s see how we use it in our daily lives.

  • In shopping, we use the sum to calculate the prices and discounts.

  • In cooking, to add the ingredients and measure the quantities, we use addition.

  • When traveling, we use the sum to calculate the distance, costs, and time.

  • In constructions, sums are used to calculate total materials, costs, and measurements.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them in Sum

Students usually make errors when finding the sum, and mostly they tend to repeat it. In this section, we will be discussing some of the common mistakes and the ways to avoid them.

Mistake 1

Confusing the sum and product

Green Checkmark Icon Indicating Correct Solutions in This Math Topic

Students confuse sum and product, so it is important to understand what sum and product are. The sum is the result of addition, and the product is the result of multiplication. For example, 2 + 4 = 6; here 6 is the sum, and 2 × 4 = 8; here 8 is the product.

Mistake 2

Starting from zero when adding using a number line

Green Checkmark Icon Indicating Correct Solutions in This Math Topic

When adding numbers using a number line, students sometimes add from zero instead of the first addend. This is incorrect. When using a number line to add, first mark the addend on the number line, move from there, not from zero.

Mistake 3

Errors in carrying over digits

When adding multi-digit numbers, students forget to carry over the digits, which can lead to errors. Whenever adding multi-digit numbers, try to double-check and verify the answer.

Mistake 4

Not recognizing the sum word in word problems

When working with word problems, kids may be confused about the operations. So, students should first highlight the keywords, such as total, altogether, and sum, in the word problems.

Mistake 5

When using a number line to add, moving to the left

When adding numbers using a number line, students sometimes move toward the left instead of the right. Students should always remember that the value in the number line increases when moving to the right. Remember, we move to the right for addition and the left for subtraction.

Problem 1

There are 4 red balloons and 6 blue balloons at the party. How many balloons are there altogether?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

The total number of balloons is 10

Explanation

To find the number of balloons altogether, we add the number of red balloons and blue balloons.
So, the total number of balloons = 4 + 6 = 10

Problem 2

A bus stopped and picked up 4 people. At the next stop, 6 more people got on. How many people got on in total?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

The total number of people = 10

Explanation

The number of people who got on the bus = 4 + 6 = 10

Problem 3

Use a number line to find the sum of two and six.

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

The sum of 2 and 6 is 8

Explanation

To add 2 and 6 using a number line, we first mark 2 and then move 6 steps to the right. It lands at 8. So, 2 + 6 = 8

Problem 4

Find the sum when six is added to five.

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

6 + 5 = 11

Explanation

To find the sum, we add the numbers together. So, 6 + 5 = 11

Problem 5

Liam has 9 pencils in his pencil box. He finds 2 more under his desk. How many pencils does he have now?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

The number of pencils Liam has is 11

Explanation

Liam had 9 pencils, and he found 2 more. So the total number of pencils is 9 + 2 = 11
