Numbers up to 5-Digits

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

A number with up to 5 digits, where the first digit can be any number from 1 to 9, is known as a 5-digit number. The 5th place value of a number is called ‘Ten Thousand’ in both the Indian and International number systems. We will learn more about numbers up to 5 digits below.

What are 5-Digit Numbers?

Any number that has exactly five digits is known as a 5-digit number. The numbers that range from 10000 to 99999 are the 5-digit numbers. For example, 54321 and 98765 are 5-digit numbers.

How to Write Numbers up to 5-Digits?

The 5-digit number can be written in two different systems: International number system and Indian number system

In both the international and Indian number systems, we generally do not use commas for 5-digit numbers. However, to aid readability, we can place a comma after every 2 digits from the right in the Indian system or after every 3 digits in the international system.

For example, the smallest 5-digit number is written as 10,000 in both systems.

Comparison of the Indian System and the International System

Both the Indian and International number systems represent numbers up to 5 digits similarly, with the place values being the same: Units, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, and Ten Thousands.

How to Decompose 5-Digit Numbers?

Any 5-digit number has place values that can go up to ten thousand. Here are the place value names from right to left in a 5-digit number.

Digit 1: Ones / Units

Digit 2: Tens

Digit 3: Hundreds

Digit 4: Thousands

Digit 5: Ten Thousands

Let us take an example number: 54321 and break it into its place values.

Digit 1: PV = 1 × 1 = 1

Digit 2: PV = 2 × 10 = 20

Digit 3: PV = 3 × 100 = 300

Digit 4: PV = 4 × 1000 = 4000

Digit 5: PV = 5 × 10000 = 50000

Here, PV stands for Place Value.

Tips and Tricks for Numbers up to 5-Digit

5-digit numbers are relatively simpler to read and write, but understanding place values can make it even easier. These tips will help you work with numbers up to 5 digits without confusion.

  • Instead of reading all the digits at once, break them down according to place values.

  • Count the digits to know the size of a number. For example, if a given number is 4 digits, it is less than 10,000; if it is 5 digits, the number is 10,000 or more.

  • Adding a zero to the number multiplies the number by 10. For example, 5,000 × 10 = 50,000, and now the number becomes a 5-digit number.

Reading a number without considering its place value leads to incorrect reading. Break the number according to place values and read each group separately.

Mistake 5
