What is the Divisibility Rule of 293?

The divisibility rule for 293 is a technique to determine if a number is divisible by 293 without performing division. Let's check whether 5879 is divisible by 293 using the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Multiply the last digit of the number by 9. In 5879, 9 is the last digit, so multiply it by 9. 9 × 9 = 81

Step 2: Subtract the result from Step 1 from the remaining digits, excluding the last digit. That is, 587–81 = 506.

Step 3: As it is shown that 506 is not a multiple of 293, the number is not divisible by 293. If the result from step 2 is a multiple of 293, then the number is divisible by 293.

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 293

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids master division. Let’s explore a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 293.

Know the multiples of 293:

Memorize the multiples of 293 (293, 586, 879, etc.) to quickly check divisibility. If the result from the subtraction is a multiple of 293, the number is divisible by 293.

Use negative numbers:

If the result after the subtraction is negative, disregard the sign and consider it positive for checking divisibility.

Repeat the process for large numbers:

Students should repeat the divisibility process until they reach a small number that is divisible by 293. For example, check if 8794 is divisible by 293 using the divisibility test.

Multiply the last digit by 9, i.e., 4 × 9 = 36.

Subtract the result from the remaining digits, 879–36 = 843.

Still, 843 is a large number, so repeat the process. Multiply the last digit by 9, 3 × 9 = 27.

Now subtract 27 from the remaining numbers, 84–27 = 57.

Since 57 is not a multiple of 293, 8794 is not divisible by 293.

Use the division method to verify:

Students can use the division method to verify and cross-check their results. This will help them confirm their understanding.
