Basic rules for XXIII in roman numerals:

There are certain rules to write a number in roman number. Let’s discuss some of the basic rules which need to be followed

Rule 1: Addition method: There are certain letters used in roman numerals. So, a large value is followed by a small value to express the value.

For example, when we write 23 in roman numerals.

X (20) +X (20) + I (1) + I (1) +I (1) = XXIII (23)

Rule 2: Repetition method: When a roman numeral is repeated, it means we need to add it to find the value. The maximum a number can repeat is three times.

For example, when we write 23 in roman numerals.

X (20) +X (20) + I (1) + I (1) +I (1) = XXIII (23)

Here, X is repeated twice. So, X + X = 20

And I is repeated thrice, so I + I +I = 3

So we add it all together, it's 23 (XXIII).

Rule 3: subtraction method: Subtraction method is only used for certain combination. We use it in the combination where the small numeral is followed by a large numeral, here we subtract the smaller from the larger numeral.

For example, 4 is written as IV

V(5) - I(1) = lV(4)

Rule 4: Limitation rule: In roman numerals, the numerals cannot be repeated more than three times, and some are not repeated at all. The numerals like V, L, and D are not repeated at all. So, addition and subtraction methods are used to get the value.

For example, to write 23 in roman numerals, we use addition.

 X + X + I + I + I = XXIII

How to write XXIII in roman numerals?

To write a number in roman numerals, we use certain methods. They are

  • By expansion method
  • By Grouping method

23 in roman numeral by expansion method

In expansion method the numeral is split based on the place value, that is ones, tens, hundreds, etc. individual place is converted into roman numerals separately.

First, let’s break down 23 based on place value

In ten’s place we have 2 and 3 in one's place that is 20 + 3

Next, changing the place value of numerals into Roman numerals.

That's it 20 + 3 can be converted into the following

20 = X +X = XX
 3 = I + I + I = III

Next, we need to combine

So 23 can be written as XXIII in roman numerals.

23 in roman numerals by grouping method

Grouping method is used based on the basic rules in roman numbers. Here we break down the larger numerals into smaller based on the roman numerals.

To write XXIII in numerals using grouping methods, first let's break down XXIII.

That is, XXIII will be breakdown into X + X + I + I + I

Now, let’s convert the roman numerals into numerals

X (10) + X (10) = XX(20)

I + I + I = III(3)

So, XXIII is 23.
