Importance of Multiplication Tables for Students

importance of multiplication tables

The basics of math include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. For doing multiplication and division, one must be aware of multiplication tables. It is very important to have a strong foundation on multiplication.

Learning basic multiplication tables makes it easier to do bigger multiplication. And moreover, it increases one’s mental math skills. When kids memorize multiplication tables, it makes it easy for them to do mental math.

Tips and tricks to learn multiplication tables

Multiplication is a part of basic math skills, so it is significant to learn multiplication tables. To learn tables faster, follow the tips and tricks mentioned below.

  • Memorization is one of the effective methods to learn tables. Memorizing multiplication tables makes it easy to do complex multiplication.

  • While introducing multiplication tables to kids, try to use exclusive multiplication tables for kids. Because visual representations can easily attract kids.

  • A multiplication table can be understood through repeated addition. For example, in the multiplication table of 2,

the same repeated addition can be followed in all the tables.

  • The result of the tables with ends with the number 0 like 10, 20, 30, etc. We can multiply the number in tens place with the multiplier and then add 0 to the end. For example, 10 × 5 = 50 can be calculated as 1 × 5 = 5, and if we add a 0 gives the result of 50.

  • Multiplication has a commutative property, i.e., a × b = b × a

For example, 5 × 3 = 15, 3 × 5 = 15.

  • When multiplying larger numbers is difficult. So break down the number to avoid errors. For example,

25 × 5 = 125

It can be split into,

(20 × 5) + (5 × 5)

= 100 + 25 = 125.

How to use multiplication chart

Multiplication charts are one of the best ways to practice math tables. It is the multiplication grid, consisting of the numbers and their products. Let’s check how to use a multiplication chart.

Step 1: First we need to locate the numbers, from the first row and column.

Step 2: Find the grid where the row and column intersect.
