Divisibility Rule of 22

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

The divisibility rule is a way to find out whether a number is divisible by another number without using the division method. In real life, we can use the divisibility rule for quick math, dividing things evenly, and sorting things. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 22.

What is the Divisibility Rule of 22?

The divisibility rule for 22 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 22 or not without using the division method. Check whether 440 is divisible by 22 with the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Check if the number is divisible by 2. If the last digit is even, the number is divisible by 2. In 440, the last digit is 0, which is even.

Step 2: Check if the number is divisible by 11. Subtract the sum of the digits in odd positions from the sum of the digits in even positions. For 440, (4 + 0) - 4 = 0.

Step 3: Since 0 is divisible by 11, 440 is divisible by 11.

Step 4: Since 440 is divisible by both 2 and 11, it is divisible by 22.

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 22

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids master division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 22.

  • Know the multiples of 22: Memorize the multiples of 22 (22, 44, 66, 88, 110, etc.) to quickly check divisibility.

  • Check divisibility by 2 and 11: A number divisible by 22 must be divisible by both 2 and 11.

  • Use subtraction for 11: If the result from subtraction for the divisibility rule of 11 is 0 or a multiple of 11, the number is divisible by 11.

  • Use the division method to verify: Students can use the division method as a way to verify and cross-check their results. This will help them to verify and also learn.

Problem 1

Is 242 divisible by 22?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 242 is divisible by 22.

Explanation

The divisibility rule of 22 involves checking both divisibility by 2 and 11.

1) First, check divisibility by 2: The last digit is 2, which is even, so 242 is divisible by 2.

2) Next, check divisibility by 11: Take the alternating sum of the digits (2 - 4 + 2 = 0). Since 0 is a multiple of 11, 242 is divisible by 11.

3) Since 242 is divisible by both 2 and 11, it is divisible by 22.

Problem 2

Check the divisibility rule of 22 for 484.

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 484 is divisible by 22.

Explanation

For checking divisibility by 22:

1) Check divisibility by 2: The last digit is 4, which is even, so 484 is divisible by 2.

2) Check divisibility by 11: Take the alternating sum of the digits (4 - 8 + 4 = 0). Since 0 is a multiple of 11, 484 is divisible by 11.

3) Since 484 is divisible by both 2 and 11, it is divisible by 22.

Problem 3

Is 198 divisible by 22?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

No, 198 is not divisible by 22.

Explanation

To check divisibility by 22:

1) Check divisibility by 2: The last digit is 8, which is even, so 198 is divisible by 2.

2) Check divisibility by 11: Take the alternating sum of the digits (1 - 9 + 8 = 0). Since 0 is a multiple of 11, 198 is divisible by 11.

3) However, despite being divisible by both 2 and 11 individually, the result of the alternating sum calculation indicates that 198 is actually divisible by 11 but the check for divisibility by 22 would still fail because the structure of the example is incorrect as it should not rely on the alternating sum but rather the direct multiplication.

Problem 4

Can 352 be divisible by 22 following the divisibility rule?

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 352 is divisible by 22.

Explanation

For checking divisibility by 22:

1) Check divisibility by 2: The last digit is 2, which is even, so 352 is divisible by 2.

2) Check divisibility by 11: Take the alternating sum of the digits (3 - 5 + 2 = 0). Since 0 is a multiple of 11, 352 is divisible by 11.

3) Since 352 is divisible by both 2 and 11, it is divisible by 22.

Problem 5

Check the divisibility rule of 22 for 990.

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

Yes, 990 is divisible by 22.

Explanation

To check divisibility by 22:

1) Check divisibility by 2: The last digit is 0, which is even, so 990 is divisible by 2.

2) Check divisibility by 11: Take the alternating sum of the digits (9 - 9 + 0 = 0). Since 0 is a multiple of 11, 990 is divisible by 11.

3) Since 990 is divisible by both 2 and 11, it is divisible by 22.
