Numbers that can only be divided by 1 and the number itself are called prime numbers. These numbers are used in algorithms and data encryption to create secure passwords. Here, in this topic, we will find if 98 is a prime number or not.

Is 98 a Prime Number?

As discussed above, a number is considered prime if it can only be divided by 1 and the number itself. Here, the given number 98 is not prime. Other than 1 and 98 as its factors, there are other factors as well. 98 has six factors - 1,2,7,14,49,98.

Why is 98 not a Prime Number?

If a number is prime, then it will have only two factors. For the number 98, there are six factors in total. Therefore, we can say that 98 is not a prime number.

Take a look at the below-mentioned methods to check for prime numbers:

  • Counting Divisors Method
  • Divisibility Test
  • Prime Number Chart
  • Prime Factorization

Using Counting Divisors Method

A number with just two divisors is prime, while a number with more than two divisors is composite. Thus, in this method, we will count the number of divisors for a given number to determine if it's a prime number or not.

Step 1: Find the divisors of the given number 98
Step 2: Start dividing 98 from 1
Step 3: Check for divisors of 98 up to its square root.
Step 4: Count the number of divisors

The divisors of 98 are 1, 2, 7, 14, 49, and 98

98 ÷ 1 = 98
98 ÷ 2 = 49
98 ÷ 7 = 14

Hence, 98 is a composite number.

Using the Divisibility Test Method

The given number will be taken as the dividend, and we check for its divisibility using the divisibility rules. If the remainder is zero, then that number is the divisor.

We check for divisibility starting from smaller numbers like 2 and 3.

Since the number 98 ends in an even number, it is divisible by 2 (98 ÷ 2 = 49)

The sum of the digits of 98 is not a multiple of 3. Therefore, it is not divisible by 3 (98 ÷ 3 = 32.66)

The last digit of the number is not 0 or 5. Hence, it is not divisible by 5 either (98 ÷ 5 = 19.6)

Keep checking for divisibility until you get the divisors up to the square root of the number.

We find the divisors of 98 as 1, 2, 7, 14, 49, and 98.

Using Prime Number Chart

To determine if a number is prime, we take a look at the prime number chart. If the number is present in the chart, then it’s a prime number.

The table given below shows the prime numbers from 50 to 200:

We cannot see 98 in the table given above. This means that 98 is not a prime number.

Using Prime Factorization Method

In this method, we will break down the composite number into its prime factors and express their product using exponents. Let’s break down 98 into its prime factors:

98 ÷ 2 = 49
49 ÷ 7 = 7
7 ÷ 7 = 1

The prime factorization of 98 is expressed as 21 × 72
