Even if people don’t know exactly what Minecraft is, they may have heard the word or seen images of the Minecraft world.

For gamers, Minecraft has quickly become one of the most popular and entertaining games available today. 

Minecraft has grown to be such a large game that players must keep track of many different aspects. The name tag is one such example.

What is a Name Tag in Minecraft?

A Name Tag is an item used to name mobs in the Minecraft world and prevent them from despawning naturally. 

Name tags when placed on an NPC (Non-player character), gives them a unique name. The name that’s given will be displayed above the head when you get closer and look at them. 

Name tags can be caught as part of the treasure category while fishing, with a 16% chance after the 5% chance of being a treasure catch. 

The Luck of the Sea enchantment increases the likelihood of catching treasure. 

As one of their available trades, Master-level librarian villagers offer to sell a name tag for 20 emeralds.

Let’s briefly understand the different game controls in PE & Java edition to use Name Tag in Minecraft

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac) runs on a PC or Mac computer. You would use your keyboard and mouse to move in through the game. 

Minecraft Pocket Edition (PE)

Minecraft Pocket Edition (PE) runs on your tablet or mobile device. You would use the touch screen controls to move through the game.

How To Use Name Tag In Minecraft: Pe & Java Edition 

These are the materials to use a name tag in Minecraft PE & JAVA edition

  • A name tag 
  • An anvil 

Placing the Anvil

When the materials are ready, add an anvil to the Hotbar so you can see the item on the list.

Right-click on the block in Java Edition, and tap on the block in PC Edition. Place your pointer (the + sign) on the block to position the anvil. 

The highlighted block can now be seen in your game window.

The crafting recipe is three iron blocks in the top row, one iron in the center of the middle row, and three iron blocks in the bottom row.

Using the anvil

Stand in front of the anvil to use the anvil. For Java Edition, right-click on the anvil, and for PC edition tap on the anvil.

Once your anvil is open, you will see the ‘repair and name’ menu.

Adding the name to the Name Tag

To add a name to the Name Tag, move the name tag to the first slot. Click on the brown box labeled ‘Name Tag,’ and then enter the name.

Press Delete to remove keywords. Then enter the name you want to give the character.

Move the name tag to the inventory 

Move the name tag to the third slot of the inventory bar.

Now place the tag on the mob/character. Stand in front of the mob with the name tag selected on the Hotbar. 

For Java Edition, right-click on the character, and for PC edition tap on the character. So, the mob is officially named using the name tag.

A Name Tag can be caught while fishing or traded with a master-level librarian villager.

When a mob is named, it retains its name and consumes the name tag and it is removed from the mob cap.
