The divisibility rule is a way to determine whether a number is divisible by another number without using the division method. In real life, we can use the divisibility rule for quick math, dividing things evenly, and sorting things. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 389.
The divisibility rule for 389 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 389 or not without using the division method. Check whether 1167 is divisible by 389 with the divisibility rule.
Step 1: Multiply the last digit of the number by 9, here in 1167, 7 is the last digit, multiply it by 9. 7 × 9 = 63
Step 2: Multiply the second last digit by 8, then add to the result of Step 1. The second last digit is 6. 6 × 8 = 48, so add 63 + 48 = 111.
Step 3: Multiply the third last digit by 3, then add to the result of Step 2. The third last digit is 1. 1 × 3 = 3, so add 111 + 3 = 114.
Step 4: Subtract the result from Step 3 from the remaining values excluding the last three digits. Here we only have 1. Thus, 1 - 114 = -113.
Step 5: If the result from Step 4 is a multiple of 389, the number is divisible by 389. If not, then it isn't divisible by 389. Since -113 is not a multiple of 389, 1167 is not divisible by 389.
