Divisibility Rule of 185

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

The divisibility rule is a way to find out whether a number is divisible by another number without using the division method. In real life, we can use the divisibility rule for quick math, dividing things evenly, and sorting things. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 185.

What is the Divisibility Rule of 185?

The divisibility rule for 185 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 185 or not without using the division method. Check whether 4070 is divisible by 185 with the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Check if the number is divisible by 5. Since 4070 ends in 0, it is divisible by 5.

Step 2: Check if the number is divisible by 37. To do this, consider the last two digits and double it, then subtract from the rest. For 4070, double 70 to get 140, and subtract from 40: 40−140=−100. Since −100 is not a multiple of 37, 4070 is not divisible by 37.

Step 3: Since 4070 is not divisible by 37, it is not divisible by 185.

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 185

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids master division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 185.

  • Understand the components: The number must be divisible by both 5 and 37 to be divisible by 185.

  • Use negative numbers: If the result from the subtraction in step 2 is negative, consider its absolute value when checking divisibility by 37.

  • Repeat the process for large numbers: Students should keep repeating the divisibility process until they reach a small number that is divisible by 37.

  • Use the division method to verify: Students can use the division method as a way to verify and crosscheck their results. This will help them to verify and also learn.
