Factors Of 64

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

A number that divides another number exactly without leaving any remainder is called a factor of the given number. Factors play an important role in many real-life situations. They are useful in deciding the best time to schedule work shifts and events.

How to Find the Factors of 64?

For finding factors, kids can use different methods for easy calculation. A few commonly used methods are as follows:

  • Use of Multiplication Method

  • Use of Division Method

  • Use of Prime Factors and Prime Factorization.

So, here we discuss a detailed explanation of the following methods.

Finding Factors Using Multiplication Method

In the multiplication method, we will try to find out what numbers will multiply together, and give the value 64. We will check the factors step by step:

Step 1: Start to multiply with numbers that give the value of 64.
Start with 1, and continue to multiply with other numbers.
1 × 64 = 64
2 × 32 = 64
4 × 16 = 64
8 × 8   = 64

Step 2: After the calculations, we get these factor pairs of 64.

Step 3: The positive factor pairs of 64 found by multiplication are (1, 64), (2, 32), (4, 16), and  (8, 8)

Step 4: The negative factor pairs of 64 are  (-1, -64), (-2, -32), (-4, -16), (-8,-8)

Finding Factors Using Division Method

Using this method we will break down the given number till the remainder is zero. Let us go through the step-by-step process to find the factors of 64:

Step 1: Divide 64 by smaller numbers and see if there is any remainder. E.g., 64/1 = 64.

Step 2: We will continue in the same way and check for other numbers as well. For 64, the factors are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64. Because 64 can be divided evenly by these numbers.

Prime Factors and Prime Factorization

In the prime factorization method, we break down a number into its prime factor. The prime factor of 64 is 2. The prime factors can be found using the methods given below:

2 is the smallest prime number, so start dividing with two. And then continue to divide with other prime numbers.

64 ÷ 2 = 32
32 ÷ 2 = 16
16 ÷ 2 = 8
8 ÷ 2 =  4
4 ÷ 2 = 2
2 ÷ 2 = 1

With prime factorization, 64 can be broken down into prime factors of 2.

Factor Tree:

A factor tree is a visual representation of breaking a number into its prime factors. It is an easy and simple way to present the factors.

Step 1: 64 divided by 2 gives us the quotient 32.

Step 2: Since 32 is not a prime number, it can be divided further.

The prime factorization of 64 is written as  64 = 26

Factor Pairs

Every number has either a positive or negative factor. Let us look at those sets of factors.

Positive pair Factors: (1, 64), (2, 32), (4, 16), and  (8,8)
Negative pair Factors:  (-1, -64), (-2, -32), (-4, -16), and  (-8,-8)

The factors of a number can divide the given number without any remainder, whereas multiples are the products of multiplying the number by an integer. For example for 12, the factors are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. And the multiples are 12, 24, and 36, etc… To avoid this confusion, always understand the concept separately.

Problem 1

A carom board has an area of 64 square inches and a length of 8 inches. Identify the breadth.

Ray, the Boy Character from BrightChamps Saying "Let’s Begin"

The breadth of the carom board is 8 inches.

Explanation

Here, already given, the carom board is 64 inches, and its length is 8 inches. To find the breadth, divide the area by length, after the calculation we get the answer is 8 inches.

Breadth=Area ÷ length= 64 / 8 = 8 inches.
