Divisibility Rule of 124

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

The divisibility rule is a way to find out whether a number is divisible by another number without using the division method. In real life, we can use the divisibility rule for quick math, dividing things evenly, and sorting things. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 124.

What is the Divisibility Rule of 124?

The divisibility rule for 124 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 124 or not without using the division method. Check whether 3720 is divisible by 124 with the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Divide the number into groups of three digits from the right. Here, 3720 becomes 3 and 720.

Step 2: Check if all these groups are divisible by 124.

For 720, divide it by 124 to see if it is exact: 720 ÷ 124 = 5.806... (not exact, so 720 is not divisible by 124).

There's no need to check 3 since 720 isn't divisible by 124.

Step 3: As it is shown that not all groups are divisible by 124, therefore, the number is not divisible by 124.

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 124

Learning the divisibility rule helps kids master division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 124.

  • Know the multiples of 124: Memorize the multiples of 124 (124, 248, 372, 496, 620, etc.) to quickly check divisibility. If all groups formed by three digits are divisible by 124, then the number is divisible by 124.

  • Recognize the pattern in multiples: Understanding the pattern or increments in the multiples of 124 can help you quickly identify if a number is divisible by it.

  • Double-check large numbers: For large numbers, ensure each group of three digits (from right to left) is checked for divisibility by 124. If any group is not divisible, the entire number isn't divisible.

  • Use the division method to verify: Students can use the division method to verify and cross-check their results. This helps them to verify and also learn.
