To meet their daily commerce and administration needs, the ancient Romans developed Roman Numerals. It used a combination of seven symbols — I, V, X, L, C, D, and M to represent numbers. We use the subtraction method when a smaller symbol precedes a larger symbol. For example, XL = 40 (which is 50 – 10).
Symbols cannot be repeated more than three times, and some symbols, such as V, L, and D cannot be repeated more than once. For example, 10 is represented as X and not VV.
Let us learn about how to write MMDC in Roman numerals. There are two methods that we can use to write Roman numerals:
The breaking down of Roman numerals into parts and then converting them into numerals is what we call the expansion method. The expansion method involves breaking down Roman numerals into numerical form and adding them to get the final number.
Step 1: Break the Roman numerals into parts.
Step 2: Write each of the Roman numerals with its numerical digit in the place value.
Step 3: Add the numerals together.
For MMDC,
Step 1: First, we break the Roman numerals. MMDC = M + M + D + C
Step 2: Write the Roman Numerals for each part. The Roman Numeral M is 1000. The Roman Numeral D is 500. The Roman Numeral C is 100.
Step 3: Combine all the numbers. M + M + D + C = 1000 + 1000 + 500 + 100 = 2600. Therefore, the Roman Numeral MMDC is 2600.
Using subtraction and addition rules, we will apply the grouping method. This means we break the Roman numerals into smaller groups, which makes it easier to work with. This method groups the Roman numerals logically, and then we write the numbers for each group.
Step 1: Take the largest number and write the number for that Roman numeral.
Step 2: Write the Roman numeral using the subtraction and addition rules.
Example: Let’s take the Roman numeral MMDC.
Step 1: The larger Roman numerals are what we will begin with. Once split, the Roman numerals we get are MM, D, and C. The numerals for these are 2000, 500, and 100, respectively.
Step 2: Add these numerals together. M + M + D + C = 1000 + 1000 + 500 + 100 = 2600. Therefore, the numeral of MMDC is 2600.

Calculate the sum of MMDC and D. Write your answer in Roman numerals.

Convert both Roman numerals into decimal form:
MMDC = 2100
D = 500
Add the numbers: 2100 + 500 = 2600
Convert 2600 into Roman numerals: 2600 = 2000 (MM) + 600 (DC) = MMDC
Subtract CCC from MMDC. Write the result in Roman numerals.
The result is MDCCC.
Convert the Roman numerals into decimal form:
MMDC = 2600
CCC = 300
Subtract the numbers: 2600 - 300 = 2300
Convert 2300 into Roman numerals: 2300 = 2000 (MM) + 300 (CCC) = MMCCC
Divide MMDC by IV and write the answer in Roman numerals.
The answer is DXXV.
Convert MMDC and IV into decimal form:
MMDC = 2600
IV = 4
Divide the numbers: 2600 / 4 = 650
Convert 650 into Roman numerals: 650 = 500 (D) + 100 (C) + 50 (L) = DCL
Multiply MMDC by III. Write the product in Roman numerals.
The product is MMDCX.
Convert MMDC and III into decimal form:
MMDC = 2600
III = 3
Multiply the numbers: 2600 × 3 = 7800
Convert 7800 into Roman numerals: 7800 = 7000 (MMMMMMM) + 800 (DCCC) = MMMMMMMDCCC
Convert MMDC into its decimal form.
In decimal form, MMDC is 2600.
Break MMDC into components:
MM = 2000 (M + M)
DC = 600 (D + C)
