Temperature is a measure of how cold or hot is an object or environment is. Various instruments are used to measure temperature, some of them are Galileo thermometers and pyrometers. We use Celsius and Fahrenheit scale to determine the temperature. Celsius is used widely around the world, but Fahrenheit is used dominantly in the United States. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, we use F = (C × 9/5) + 32.
Let’s convert 40 °C to Fahrenheit according to the steps given below:
Step 1: By solving (C × 9/5), we get 72
Step 2: Adding 72 to 32 will give the result in Fahrenheit
→ 72 + 32 = 104
Therefore, 40 °C in Fahrenheit is 104 °F.
Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C. So the difference between these two points is 100 degrees on the Celsius scale. In the Fahrenheit scale, the difference between the two points is 180 degrees, the freezing point is 32 °F, and the boiling point at 212 °F. It measures the differences between two scales. To make both the scales match, we multiply the Celsius value by the ratio of their range.
The ratio is Fahrenheit range/Celsius range = 180/100 = 9/5 = 1.8
This means the Fahrenheit scale is 9/5 or 1.8 times larger than the Celsius scale. Therefore, for the scales to align, we multiply C with 9/5
Since C is 40, we multiply 40 × 9/5 and get 72
To match the freezing point of water in Celsius to the Fahrenheit scale, we add 32 to the Celsius scale. If we forget to add 32 while conversion from Celsius to Fahrenheit, the temperature will be incorrect.
Since (C × 9/5) equals 72, we will get the sum as 104 (72 + 32)
Therefore, 40 °C when converted to Fahrenheit using the formula ‘(C × 9/5) + 32’ is 104 °F.
