The divisibility rule is a technique to determine whether a number is divisible by another number without performing direct division. In real life, divisibility rules help us with quick calculations, evenly dividing things, and sorting items. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 493.

What is the Divisibility Rule of 493?

The divisibility rule for 493 is a method to determine if a number is divisible by 493 without using direct division. Let's check whether 986 is divisible by 493 using this rule.

Step 1: Multiply the last digit of the number by 986 by 493's last digit. Here, 6 is the last digit of 986. Multiply it by 3. So, 6 × 3 = 18.

Step 2: Subtract the result from Step 1 from the remaining values, excluding the last digit. So, 98 - 18 = 80.

Step 3: Since 80 is not a multiple of 493, 986 is not divisible by 493. If the result from Step 2 were a multiple of 493, then the number would be divisible by 493.divisibility rule of 493

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 493

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids master division. Here are some tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 493.

  • Know the multiples of 493: Memorize the multiples of 493 (493, 986, 1479, etc.) to quickly check divisibility. If the result from the subtraction is a multiple of 493, then the number is divisible by 493.

  • Use the absolute value: If the result we get after the subtraction is negative, take its absolute value for checking divisibility.

  • Repeat the process for large numbers: Students should repeat the divisibility process until reaching a small number that is divisible by 493.

For example, check if 1972 is divisible by 493 using the divisibility test. Multiply the last digit by 3, i.e., 2 × 3 = 6.

    Subtract 6 from the remaining digits, 197 - 6 = 191. Since 191 is still a large number, repeat the process. Multiply the last digit by 3, i.e., 1 × 3 = 3.

    Subtract 3 from the remaining digits, 19 - 3 = 16. As 16 is not a multiple of 493, 1972 is not divisible by 493.

  • Use division to verify: Students can use the division method as a way to verify and cross-check their results. This will help them confirm their understanding.
