Divisibility Rule of 74

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

The divisibility rule is a way to determine whether a number is divisible by another number without using the division method. In real life, we can use the divisibility rule for quick math, dividing things evenly, and sorting things. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 74.

What is the Divisibility Rule of 74?

The divisibility rule for 74 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 74 or not without using the division method. Check whether 4444 is divisible by 74 using the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Divide the number into two parts from the right: the last two digits and the remaining digits. Here, in 4444, the last two digits are 44, and the remaining part is 44.

Step 2: Multiply the last two digits by 2. 44 × 2 = 88.

Step 3: Subtract the result from Step 2 with the remaining digits: 44 - 88 = -44.

Step 4: Check if the result is a multiple of 74. Here, -44 is not a multiple of 74; therefore, 4444 is not divisible by 74.

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 74

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids master division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 74.

  • Know the multiples of 74: Memorize the multiples of 74 (74, 148, 222, 296, 370, etc.) to quickly check the divisibility. If the result from the subtraction is a multiple of 74, then the number is divisible by 74.

  • Use the negative numbers: If the result we get after the subtraction is negative, we will ignore the sign and consider it as positive for checking the divisibility of a number.

  • Repeat the process for large numbers: Students should keep repeating the divisibility process until they reach a small number that is divisible by 74. For example, check if 8888 is divisible by 74 using the divisibility test. Divide the number: 888 and 88. Multiply the last two digits by 2: 88 × 2 = 176. Subtract 888 - 176 = 712. Repeat the process: divide 712 into 71 and 2. Multiply: 2 × 2 = 4. Subtract: 71 - 4 = 67. Since 67 is not a multiple of 74, 8888 is not divisible by 74.

  • Use the division method to verify: Students can use the division method as a way to verify and crosscheck their results. This will help them to verify and also learn.
