Roman numerals are the way of expressing numbers using symbols. I, V, X, L, C, D, and M are the symbols we use. Roman Numerals are used in royal titles, book names, sequences, and so on. Here we will be discussing Roman Numerals, rules, and examples.
The royal titles, such as Henry I, Henry II, and so on. Have you noticed the names and wondered what these symbols (I and II) represented? Those are the Roman Numerals. Earlier people used to count using fingers, sticks, bones, etc. to count earlier. When life became complex, a standard form was required to count. Ancient Romans used the Roman Numeral system to count. I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000) are the symbols we use to count.
In Roman Numerals, we use XXIV to represent 24, where XX is 20 and IV is 4. Let’s learn more about Roman numerals and how we write them.
There are certain basic rules to write a number in Roman Numerals. In this section, let’s discuss some basic rules that need to be remembered when writing a number in Roman numerals.
Rule 1: Addition Method
The addition method is used when the smaller number is placed after the larger number. For example, XX → X + X → 10 + 10 = 20
Rule 2: Repetition Method
To write a large number, there are certain Roman Numerals that can be repeated up to three times. For example, XXX → 30.
Rule 3: Subtraction Method
If a small number is followed by a large number in Roman Numerals, we subtract the smaller number from the large number. For example, IV → V - I → 5 - 1 = 4
Rule 4: Limitation Rule
The symbols cannot be repeated more than three times, and some symbols like V, L, and D cannot be repeated. For example, we won't write VVV for 15; instead, we use XV.
Let’s now learn how to write 24 in Roman Numerals. Follow these methods to write the number in Roman Numerals.
By Expansion Method
By Grouping Method
In the expansion method, based on the place value, the number is broken down. In this section, we will learn how to write 24 in Roman numerals using the expansion method.
To write 24 in Roman Numerals, follow the steps:
Step 1: Break the number based on the place value. Place values are ones, tens, hundreds, etc.
For 24, we write it as 20 + 4
Step 2: Convert the number into Roman Numerals
20 in Roman Numeral — XX
4 in Roman Numeral — IV
Step 3: Combine them into Roman Numerals together.
Therefore, 24 in Roman Numeral is XX (20) + IV (4) = XXIV
When writing a large number into Roman Numerals, we group the number.
To write 24 in Roman Numeral, we group 24 as 20 + 4
20 in Roman Numeral — XX
4 in Roman Numeral — IV
So, 24 is written as XXIV in Roman Numerals.
Students make mistakes when writing a number in Roman Numerals. To master Roman Numerals, we can learn a few common mistakes and the ways to avoid them.
A historian is examining two ancient scrolls. Scroll A contains XXIV markings, and Scroll B contains twice as many markings as Scroll A. How many markings does Scroll B have in Roman numerals?
The number of markings on Scroll B is XLVIII.
Scroll A has XXIV markings, which is 24.
Scroll B has twice as many markings: 24 × 2 = 48.
48 in Roman numerals is XLVIII.
During a competition, a participant collects CCXLIV points in the first round and earns an additional XXIV points in the second round. What is the total number of points the participant has in Roman numerals?
The total number of points the participant has is CCLXVIII.
Points from the first round: CCXLIV = 244
Points from the second round: XXIV = 24
Total points: 244 + 24 = 268
268 in Roman numerals is CCLXVIII.
A museum has a collection of CCCLXXXVI artifacts. If the museum decides to display XXIV of these artifacts in a special exhibit, how many artifacts remain in the main collection?
The number of artifacts remaining in the main collection is CCCLXII.
Total artifacts: CCCLXXXVI = 386
Artifacts in the special exhibit: XXIV = 24
Remaining artifacts: 386 - 24 = 362
362 in Roman numerals is CCCLXII.
A scholar finds that adding XXIV to a number results in LXXIV. What was the original number?
The original number was L.
Final number: LXXIV = 74
Added value: XXIV = 24
Original number: 74 - 24 = 50
50 in Roman numerals is L.
Write the Roman numeral for the difference between 100 and 24 using the subtraction method.
The Roman numeral for the difference is LXXVI.
First convert the numbers 100 and 24 into Roman numerals:
100 - C
24 - XXIV
Calculate the difference: 100 - 24 = 76
76 in Roman numerals is LXXVI.
