Divisibility Rule of 319

Professor Greenline Explaining Math Concepts

The divisibility rule is a way to find out whether a number is divisible by another number without using the division method. In real life, we can use the divisibility rule for quick math, dividing things evenly, and sorting things. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 319.

What is the Divisibility Rule of 319?

The divisibility rule for 319 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 319 or not without using the division method. Check whether 638 is divisible by 319 with the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Consider the last three digits of the number. Here in 638, the whole number is the last three digits since it is less than 1000.

Step 2: Check if this number is a multiple of 319. In this case, since 638 is exactly 2 times 319 (638 ÷ 319 = 2), it is a multiple of 319.

Step 3: As it is shown that 638 is a multiple of 319, therefore, the number is divisible by 319. If the result from step 2 isn't a multiple of 319, then the number isn't divisible by 319.

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 319

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids master division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 319.

  • Know the multiples of 319: Memorize the multiples of 319 (319, 638, 957, 1276, 1595… etc.) to quickly check divisibility. If the number is one of these multiples, then it is divisible by 319.

  • Use approximation for large numbers: If a number is close to a multiple of 319, you can use estimation to determine divisibility. For example, 1595 is 5 times 319, so numbers close to 1595 can be tested for divisibility by checking if they are a multiple of 5.

  • Repeat the process for large numbers: For numbers with more than three digits, break them down into groups of three digits starting from the right and check each group. If all groups are divisible by 319, then the whole number is divisible by 319.

  • Use the division method to verify: Students can use the division method as a way to verify and cross-check their results. This will help them to verify and also learn.
