Minecraft Dungeons is a new action-adventure Minecraft video game for kids inspired by dungeon crawlers. Players are able to battle new mobs across lots of levels in either single-player or multiplayer mode in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager. It is a spin-off of the sandbox video game Minecraft movie and was released in May 2020 and February 2021 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox One S, respectively. It was also adapted into an arcade game by Raw Thrills. 

It takes place in the same made-up universe as Minecraft horse, dubbed the “Overworld,” which is home to both friendly and hostile monsters and is made up of crude 3D objects, mostly cubes, and liquid known as “blocks” that represent diverse materials. The games for kids, in contrast to Minecraft rail, has a linear, plot-driven campaign with cutscenes. Archie, an Illager, is the protagonist of the opening sequence, which describes how his tribe expelled him. He had to abandon every community he came across while looking for a new home since the residents would not let him dwell with them.

One day, Archie stumbled upon a powerful artifact known as the “Orb of Dominance,”  which granted him magic powers but also corrupted him. Now known as the “Arch-Illager” used his freshly amassed army to conquer countless villages as he sought retribution from everybody who had mistreated him. Players take on the role of heroes who set out on a mission to free oppressed towns, battle monsters, and complete other objectives while trying to destroy the Arch-Illager.

Ultimately, the players face the Arch-Illager in his castle and destroy the Orb of Dominance, freeing Archie from its influence. The players rapidly make friends with Archie and choose to be friendly and forgiving toward him rather than punishing him for his misdeeds. The orb is seen regenerating as the players and Archie leave. Then an Enderman finds it, picks up the orb, and enters the End. The last scene in the cutscene shows the mutant Enderman climbing out of the portal. In the game, after defeating Archie, players unlock new difficulties that make the game more challenging but provide better rewards.
