What is the Divisibility Rule of 999?

The divisibility rule for 999 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 999 or not without using the division method. Check whether 2997 is divisible by 999 with the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Split the number into groups of three digits starting from the right. For 2997, groups are 2 and 997.

Step 2: Sum these groups: 2 + 997 = 999.

Step 3: As 999 is a multiple of 999, the number 2997 is divisible by 999. If the result from step 2 isn't a multiple of 999, then the number isn't divisible by 999.divisibility rule of 999

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 999

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids master division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 999.

Know the multiples of 999:

Memorize the multiples of 999 (999, 1998, 2997, 3996… etc.) to quickly check divisibility. If the sum of the groups is a multiple of 999, then the number is divisible by 999.

Use the properties of addition:

If the sum we get is negative, consider its absolute value for checking the divisibility of a number.

Repeat the process for large numbers:

Students should keep repeating the divisibility process until they reach a small number that is divisible by 999.
For example, check if 5994 is divisible by 999 using the divisibility test.

Split into groups: 5 and 994.

Sum the groups: 5 + 994 = 999.

Since 999 is a multiple of 999, 5994 is divisible by 999.

Use the division method to verify:

Students can use the division method as a way to verify and cross-check their results. This will help them verify and also learn.
