Any number which has only 2 factors, i.e, one and the number itself, is a prime number. To check whether 24 is a prime number or not, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 are the factors of 24. It's clear that 24 has more factors, so 24 is not a prime number.

Using the Counting Divisors Method

Here, we need to count the total number of divisors of the given number. Prime numbers have only two factors, that is one and the number itself.

As 24 is divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.

 

As, 24 has more than 2 factors, 24 is a composite number.

Using the Divisibility Test Method

In the Divisibility method, the given number is divided by other numbers from 2 to the square root of the number. 

 

Checking is 24 a prime number using divisibility method:

 

Square root of 24 ≅ 4.8


Hence, we need to check the divisibility of 24 by 2 and 3


 
Checking the divisibility by 2: 24 is an even number, so it is divisible by 2


Checking the divisibility by 3: when we add 2 and 4 it is 6, and 6 is divisible by 3. So, 24 is divisible by 3.

 

As 24 is having more than 2 factors, it cannot be a prime number

Using Prime Number Chart

Prime number charts are used to check whether a number is prime or not. A chart consisting of all the prime numbers is called the prime number chart.

 

Let’s check whether 24 is a prime number or not using the chart.

 

Prime numbers till 30 according to the prime number chart are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31.

 

So, 24 is a composite number, as it is not part of the chart.

To find the prime factorization of a number, the number is divided into small prime numbers. The product of all prime factors will be the number. A prime number cannot be factorized again.
