The divisibility rule is a way to find out whether a number is divisible by another number without using the division method. In real life, we can use the divisibility rule for quick math, dividing things evenly, and sorting things. In this topic, we will learn about the divisibility rule of 979.

What is the Divisibility Rule of 979?

The divisibility rule for 979 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 979 or not without using the division method. Check whether 1958 is divisible by 979 with the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Divide the number into groups of three digits from the right. Here in 1958, we have two groups: 1 and 958.

Step 2: Multiply the group of digits other than the rightmost group by 1021. In this case, multiply 1 by 1021. 1 × 1021 = 1021

Step 3: Subtract the result from Step 2 from the rightmost group. 958 - 1021 = -63.

If the result is zero or a multiple of 979, then the original number is divisible by 979. Since -63 is not a multiple of 979, 1958 is not divisible by 979.

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 979

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids master division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 979.

Know the multiples of 979: Memorize the multiples of 979 (979, 1958, 2937, etc.) to quickly check divisibility. If the subtraction result is a multiple of 979, then the number is divisible by 979.

Use absolute values for subtraction results: If the subtraction result is negative, consider it as a positive number for checking divisibility.

Repeat the process for large numbers:

Students should keep repeating the divisibility process until they reach a small number that is divisible by 979. For example, check if 2937 is divisible by 979 using the divisibility test. Divide the number into groups: 2 and 937. Multiply 2 by 1021: 2 × 1021 = 2042. Subtract 2042 from 937: 937 - 2042 = -1105. Since -1105 is not a multiple of 979, 2937 is not divisible by 979.

Use the division method to verify:

Students can use the division method as a way to verify and cross-check their results. This will help them verify and also learn.
