The number 4 in Roman Numeral stands for IV. I stand for 1 and V stands for 5. When you put I before V it means you subtract 1 from 5 which gives 4. So, IV is how the Romans represented four. You may have seen that roman numerals were used in architecture.

What is IV in Roman Numerals?

In IV , I stand for 1 and V stands for 5. When you put I before V, it means you subtract 1 from 5, which equals 4. So, IV stands for 4 in Roman Numerals.

Rules for Finding 4 in Roman Numeral

Rule 1: Addition Rule

Addition of two numerals i.e., greater and smaller numeral. For example, I (1) plus II (2) makes III (3).

Ⅰ + Ⅱ = Ⅲ    or    1 + 2 = 3

Rule 2: Repetition Rule

Repetition of numerals cannot be done more than thrice, and then the number is added. This is known as the repetition method. For example, II is 2, and III is 3, but you can't do this for 5.

Ⅱ is 2 correct

Ⅲ is 3  correct

ⅡⅢ is not 5  wrong

Rule 3: Subtraction Rule

Subtraction of the smaller number from the larger number, and the larger numeral is written after the smaller numeral.

Ⅴ - Ⅰ = Ⅳ    or    5 - 1 = 4

Rule 4: Limitation Rule

We add or subtract numbers to obtain the desired numbers, as the same symbol cannot be repeated more than 3 times. For example, you can't write IIII for 4; instead, use IV.

Ⅲ  correct

ⅡⅡ wrong

Ⅳ  correct

How to write 4 in Roman Numeral

In roman numerals, we write 4 as IV.to get the desired number, we use subtraction and addition rule and combine them. We write roman numerals in methods explained below:

  • Expansion method

  • Grouping method

IV in Roman Numeral by Expansion Method

This method includes breaking down numbers based on their place values like thousands, a hundred, tens, and ones respectively. Every place value is written in the form of roman numerals.

This method works as shown below:

  • Expand and part down the numbers into place values.

  • Change the place values of numbers into roman numerals.

  • Join the roman numerals to get the desired value.

  • So, when you combine them, 4 in the Roman Numeral is written as IV.

IV in Roman Numeral by Grouping Method

This method involves breakdown of large numerals into small parts based on their Roman numeral values. This method works as follows:

  • Identify symbols: Look for roman numerals that should be added or subtracted together according to addition and subtraction rules, as discussed.

  • Breaking down larger numbers into smaller ones.

  • Add or subtract values of the smaller numerals.

  • So, while you can group four 1s as IIII, the best way to write 4 is IV.

Important Glossaries for 4 in Roman Numerals

  • Addition Method: Add the greater and smaller numerals, where the larger number follows the smaller one(e.g., II + I = III).

  • Subtraction Method: Subtract the smaller number from the larger number. Here, the larger numeral is written after the smaller numeral.

  • Repetition Method: A numeral cannot be repeated more than thrice, the number is added. This is known as the repetition method.  (e.g., II = 2, III = 3).
