Indian Numbering System — Number Names

The Indian numbering system is based on the position of the digits in a number. The rightmost digit is represented as ones, then tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousand, lakhs, and so on.

For example: 1,00,000 = One lakh.

International Numbering System — Number Names

The international numbering system also uses place values, but the way we group digits is slightly different. In this system, numbers are grouped as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands, and so on.

For example, 100,000= One Hundred Thousand.

Rules for Writing Number Names 1 to 100

Writing numbers in words becomes simple when we follow a few basic rules. These rules are based on the place value of digits and patterns in the number series. Let’s explore the rules for writing number names for the range of 1 to 100:

Rule 1: Numbers from 1 to 20 have their unique spellings and do not follow a regular pattern.
For example: 4 = Four, 11 = Eleven, and 18 = eighteen.

Rule 2: For numbers between 21 and 99, the tens digit gives the main part like twenty, thirty, forty. And the one’s digit adds the ending.

For example :

28 = Twenty-Eight; the tens digit is 2 and the one’s digit is 8.
47= Forty-Seven; the tens digit is 4 and the ones digit is 7.

Rule 3: Break down bigger numbers into smaller ones using their place value. Then combine their names to write the full number in words.

For example :
815 = 800 + 15

Write Eight hundred for 800 and fifteen for 15.

Rule 4: Numbers greater than 100 are written by combining the hundreds place, tens place,  and one place. For example: 101 is written as one hundred and one.

This rule can be applied to 999, and then we get 1000, which is written as one thousand.
