What is the Divisibility Rule of 27?

The divisibility rule for 27 is a method by which we can find out if a number is divisible by 27 or not without using the division method. Check whether 486 is divisible by 27 with the divisibility rule.

Step 1: Find the sum of the digits of the number. Here in 486, the sum is 4+8+6=18.

Step 2: Check if the sum obtained in Step 1 is divisible by 9. If it is, multiply the sum by 3 to check for divisibility by 27. Here, 18 is divisible by 9 (since 18/9=2), and 18 multiplied by 3 is 54, which is not divisible by 27. Therefore, 486 is not divisible by 27.divisibility rule of 27

Tips and Tricks for Divisibility Rule of 27

Learning the divisibility rule will help kids to master the division. Let’s learn a few tips and tricks for the divisibility rule of 27.

  • Know the multiples of 27: Memorize the multiples of 27 (27, 54, 81, 108, 135, etc.) to quickly check divisibility. If 486 were divisible by 27, 54 would need to be a multiple of 27, which it is not.

  • Use the sum of digits: If the sum of the digits is not divisible by 9, you can immediately determine that the number is not divisible by 27.

  • Break down the problem: For large numbers, break them down into manageable parts, find the sum of digits for each part, and check divisibility by 27.

  • Use the division method to verify: Students can use the division method as a way to verify and crosscheck their results. This will help them to verify and also learn.
