In roman numerals, 28 is written as XXVIII, where 20=XX and 8=VIII. You may have come across the roman numerals in legal documents to make it look more professional.

What is 28 in Roman Numerals?

In roman numerals, roman numerals we use letters ‘I, V, X, L, C, D, M’ , here numeral XXVIII stands for 28. The expansion of 28 is XX+VIII or 10(X)+10(X)+8 (VIII).

Basic Rules for XXVIII in Roman Numerals

Rule 1: Addition method


The addition of two symbols, where the smaller symbols comes after the greater symbol.
Example: X (10)+X(10)+VIII=XXVIII(28)
Here, we add numeral XX (20) with VIII(8).


Rule 2: Repetition Method


In this method, repeated values are added together,  but the values cannot be repeated more than three times.
Example: X (10)+X(10)=XX(20)
X (10)+X (10)+X(10)=XXX(30)


Rule 3: Subtraction method


In the subtraction of roman numerals, The subtraction of two symbols, where the greater symbols comes after the smaller symbol.
Example: 5-1=V-I=IV(4), number 1 is placed before 5, so ‘I’ is subtracted from V.
10-1=X-I=IX(9), number 1 is placed before 10, so ‘I’ is subtracted from X.


Rule 4: Limitation Rule


We add or subtract numbers to obtain the desired numbers, as the same symbol cannot be repeated more than 3 times.  Example: 4: Instead of writing IIII we write IV(5-1).

 6: Instead of writing IIIIII we write VI(5+1)

The parting down numbers based on their place values like thousands, a hundred, tens, and ones respectively. Every place value is written in the form of roman numerals.


This method works as shown below:


Expand and part down the numbers into place values.


Change the place values of numbers into roman numerals.


Join the roman numerals to get the desired value.

 

Example: 1. CXXVIII:


C=100
XX=20
VIII=8


Adding, 100+20+8=128, CXXVIII.

XXI in Roman Numeral by Grouping Method

The parting down of large numerals into small parts based on their Roman numeral values. This method works as follows:


Identify symbols: Look for roman numerals that should be added or subtracted together according to addition and subtraction rules, as discussed.


Parting down larger numbers into smaller ones.


Add or subtract values of the smaller numerals.

 

Example:


1. CXXVIII
XX→20
C→100
VIII→8


Add: (100+20)+8=128
